Course: Millicent Golf Club
Town: Millicent
Region: Limestone Coast
State: South Australia
Millicent Golf Club is around 13 km’s out of the South Australian town of Millicent. For those not familiar with this golf course I am sure you will find the whole experience an absolute surprise.
Tucked away amongst the massive pine plantations of the Mt Burr Forest Reserves you will find this hidden golfing gem. The surprise factor lies in the course condition, layout and location.
Rated as South Australia’s 8th best golf course in the state in 2019.
Millicent Golf Course was also one of only 60 featured in the “Australian Premiere Golf Courses” publication.
The eighteen greens and fairways are all watered and generally in excellent condition. Generous fairways are lined with thick native scrub, large eucalypt trees and low ferns. If you find yourself, like I tend to, straying into these areas, forget it, the scrub will eat your ball never to be seen again.
Other holes have challenging second cut areas amongst large trees if you happen to miss the excellent fairway surfaces. Be prepared for a good workout especially if playing all eighteen.
Millicent is very much an undulating golf course.
Playing up and down lies on fairway slopes is unavoidable adding to the challenges this course provides.
There are a sprinkling of very annoyingly well placed fairway bunkers and the greens are protected by equally well placed bunkers. Some of the longer Par 4 and Par 5 dog legs have me questioning my club choice and asking that “shall I try going over the top?” question.
I continue to refer to the surprise factors this course delivers and for me one of the sweetest surprises is the complete lack of other people on the course. I have played Millicent many times as it is my local course when I am home. Most times I have had this fantastic facility all to myself or only a handful of other golfers. In fact there are more kangaroos watching your game than people.
This can be an advantage when those embarrassing miss hits, slices or bodgy approach shots are witnessed by a hopping native mammal that doesn’t understand why these human types keep walking around in their back yard and chase little balls around.
There are competition days but if you pick your day you will find no waiting or queues. Even on a busy day you will still have no issues with crowds. This enhances the natural surrounds and serenity of the Millicent golfing experience.
The clubrooms are seldom open outside of comp times and the course has the drop your money in the slot honesty system for green fees. By the way those fees are very reasonable and are currently $20 for nine and $30 for eighteen and all players are welcome.
Even if you are just passing through the Millicent area and you have your clubs in the boot, you will be doing yourself a golfing injustice if you don’t take the time out to swing the club at Millicent Golf Club
