Finchys Australia – Where Do You Start?
She came up the wooden steps in the darkness. Dripping wet after swimming a few laps inside the heavy steel mesh surrounds of the jetty pool.
Four of us with fishing rods in hand, watched open mouthed as she strolled down the jetty in the warm evening air back towards the coloured lights of the pubs outdoor dining area. No towel, no clothes.
“Not on your Nellie! You wouldn’t catch me in there with the all those jelly fish at night” my mate Jo announced.
In agreeance, we returned to the business of re-baiting hooks and jiggling squid jigs. Coming along the jetty in the daylight a few hours earlier we’d seen evidence of others who’d had a good nights fishing. Recent splattered black blotches on the worn wooden planks.
It was a fine night. One of the best of the summer of 2020. No wind, a soft orange glow dropping behind the hills to the south west, over the caravan park on the beach.
With our friends only staying a few days with us, we’d packed in the best of what Streaky has to offer.
Finchy and I stayed, worked or travelled through Streaky Bay and the Eyre Peninsula four years running. The pull of the region for us is strong as we both love the remoteness, not to mention the rugged beauty of the coastline and its marine birds and animals.
