The beautiful formal Cave Gardens and parks surrounding another sinkhole are found right in the centre of the city. The Umpherston Sinkhole and Sunken Garden is found out of town towards Victoria set towards the rear of a large sprawling park with shady parking and BBQ areas. Another unusual cave in Mt Gambier is the Engelbrecht Cave. This is also set in a large park with over 160 steps that lead you into the cave which can only be viewed on a tour. It is a popular site for cave divers to enter underwater caverns and tunnels.
Limestone and gardens go together in the South Eastern corner of South Australia. Fertile soil from the ancient earthquake activity and with an average rainfall of 750mm most cool climate plants thrive in this region. The Umpherston Sinkhole is a creative combination of the two, started and cared for by community members over several generations.
